The first cross country meeting of the season took place at
Sevenoaks. We managed full teams
for both the ladies and mens sections though we were missing some of our key
competitors, with illness, injury and other commitments. Some of those who were
there were also not at their peak! However, a number of runners put in good
performances.

KFL Race Report - Rob Brighttt
Larkfield AC took their first steps towards defending their league title in the
opening meeting of the Kent Fitness League on Sunday. The 2011 champions held
off a strong challenge from the 2010 champions, Paddock Wood AC..
Amidst the sun-kissed autumnal spendour of Knole Park, nearly 400 runners set
out on the tough 5.6 mile long race which took in some steep climbs and ascents
around the two lap route as well as some fantastic scenery. This great venue was
denied to us last year owing to weather and worries about possible damage to the
rare grassland – so it was a real treat for us to be back there once again.
By the halfway point – a group of three had broken away at the front comprising
guest entrant Jamie Bryant, Gareth Robb (Paddock Wood) and Noel Sutton (Thanet.
As they ran along the side of Knole House, 17 year old Bryant started to pull
away and soon the chasers lost touch. Bryant, a talented steeplechaser from
Tonbridge AC who was placed 24th in the English National XC Championships back
in February, went on to win by a margin of half a minute over Gareth Robb (the
official victor) with Noel Sutton leading home the over 40’s in third place.
Gareth Robb was tracked closely by Paddock Wood clubmate and former champion
James Ridger who came home in fourth place, but their next scorers were
finishing in the high 20’s. Malcolm Martin made a valuable contribution to the
club’s effort by finishing 30th – the highest placed over 50 on the day. By
contrast, Larkfield had 5 runners in the top 20, including Martin Taylor who
clocked in as their over 40 vet in 18th place. Trevor Walker was their best
placed over 50 in 65th place, making a return after a year of injury setbacks.
The top placed over 60 man was Bromley’s Chris Marshall in 131st place overall,
while our oldest competitor Richard Pitcairn Knowles (78) came home in 247th
place.
The ladies’ race was also headed by a guest runner – this time the familiar
figure of Tina Oldershaw who finished in 17th place overall and fully justified
her continued status as an elite athlete. It was a further 1 ½ minutes before
Nicola Groom (Larkfield) came in as the official ladies’ winner ahead of Claire
Gaskill and Penny Holden. Even without Oldershaw’s point scoring, Paddock Wood
had a strong female contingent with Laura Burton in 4th place, Clare Day 10th
and Fiona Buckingham in 14th; a performance which put the trio on top of the
ladies’ league table after the first race.
Other results of note came from Barbara Wenman, leading F50, took 7th place; and
Miriam Dorrity (F55) finished 34th.
So all in all it was a great start to the season with great organisation from
Rob Carr and all the people from Sevenoaks AC, sadly missing the services of
Neil Smith (founder member) who died earlier this year. We also had 23 taking
part in the junior race for which results are attached – note that I have set up
a separate circulation list for those wishing to receive these results.
