Bewl Water 15 mile - 2 July
Jane Greenfield 2.45
Helen James 3.15
A lovely run around the
reservoir at Bewl Water but probably the hottest
day of the year.
Numerous runners pulled out
before the race because of the heat and most
people walked for part.
A great race on a cooler day
and it's only 14.2 really!
Orpington Open 2k, 10k & fun run
- Sunday 25 June
Phil

Jane Greenfield 58:31
John Soper 1:00:11
Beth Wilkinson 1:00:40
Barbara Pope 1:14:52
This
years Orpington 10k marked John Soper's
60th birthday.
It
was hailed by many of the runners as the
best ever. The course was re-routed
slightly having lost the bridge over the A21.
Start line was in Lovibonds Avenue instead of on
the Darrick Wood School field. It is a popular
family race, with a 2k race for children school
years 3-6 and 7-11. After the 10k a fun run took
place for all.
The
aerobics warm up was given by an aging hippy!
Stalls
on School field included: barbecue, home made
cakes, sandwiches and drinks, a wine guessing
game
It
was a hot day and the course does not get any
easier (as you get older!!)
St Petersberg 10k - 24 June
Shirley Poole [time - didn't
matter!]
The race started at 5.00pm
and it was about 25 degrees.
The marathon runners in
front, followed by the 10k, then the fun
runners.
It was quite a nice route,
although there was very little shade. It started
in a big square, then ran along a road by a
river, over a bridge along the road on the other
side of the river, back over another bridge and
back to the square. No medals to mark the
occasion though.
Edinburgh Marathon - 11 June
Iain Hume 6.34.19
The fourth Edinburgh
marathon started at 9am from Princes Street.
It was reported that some
9,500 were at the line up. About 4,500 were in
the full marathon whilst the remainder were the
first leg of the Hairy Haggis Team
Relay. The weather was good; no cloud in
the sky but the temperature was in the 70s.
Passing Edinburgh Castle on
the left and turning into Lothian Road. Beyond
Tollcross it goes into the wider roads and the
meadows and into the narrower streets of the
Auld Toon at Cowgate. This part of
the city blends the old and new architcture , the
predominant building being the Scottish
Parliament Building. A short way then past the
Royal Holyrood Palace, which apparently dates
from 1498. The route follows the roads beyond
Meadowbank Stadium and onto a gentle but long
downhill stretch. Then the Firth of Forth and
left away from Edinburgh onto Silverknows
esplanade and towards Crammond which was the
turning point and halfway. You then retraced your
steps along the West Shore, Granton Harbour then
Ocean Terminal where the HMY Britannia is on
view. Portobello Promenade marked the 22 miles
point with the last four miles uphill to Holyrood
Park again and a very welcome finish line.
Seaford Half Marathon -
Sunday 4 June
Another lovely day for this
informal and friendly race. Jane, Phil and son
Matt (15) walked the route this time.
The race is organised by the
local Lions Club and runners, joggers and walkers
all take part.
The start is on the seafront
at Seaford, which is beautiful on a sunny day
(not bad on a dull day either!) Through fields
and a small village before getting onto the South
Downs Way and into Alfriston. Stopping for a
packed lunch then and back into Seaford itself,
around the estuary and up and over the cliffs,
meant it took over 4 hours to complete but no-one
hurries you. There's a medal afor everyone nd
biscuits/drinks provided by friendly marshals en
route.
A wonderful one for all the
family to enjoy!
Harvel 5 - Saturday 3 June
Maureen Farish 57.59
Geraldine Turner 59.28
Shirley Poole 60.34
The race started at 2.00pm
in the afternoon, just at its hottest time of the
day. I think this was one of the most
hottest days we had had so far this year. Running
through woodland but very hilly and quite
hazardous with lots of stones and tree roots.
All things considered an
enjoyable race though with a very nice medal.

Road Relay - Wed 3 May (3 x 2.6 miles)
We managed only
one team for annual Beckenham Road Relay this
year. Chris Marshall, Mike Abousselam and Mike

creditable 12th place. Their total time was 48.49
over the three 2.6 mile legs.

Uttoxeter
Half Marathon - Sunday 30 April
As
a guest for the weekend of Jane's London Marathon
first-time (see below), Jane and Phil tackled the
Uttoxeter half. It's a real killer this one as it
has a really steep and then lingering climb in
the middle of the race when you least need it.

A
good turn out from BVAC again this year. Times at

en route.

Worthing 20 Miles by Phil
Greenfield - Sunday 2 April
There were 598
runners who completed the course which was four
five mile laps around Worthing, starting and
finishing on the seafront. Unfortunately those
didnt include Ron Gadd nor Bridgit Weekes
who both had to retire injured.
However the day
was extremely enjoyable and all runners involved
made the most of the getaway to the seaside!

Perhaps next
year the wind wont blow quite as much and
well be able to get all our team around in
one piece, fit and healthy.
Hastings Half Marathon by
John Nothard - Sunday 12 March
Having
obtained the all clear from 2 specialists (back
and knees) to resume running, I thought it
would be a good idea to give myself a target to
aim for. For some reason I chose the
Hastings.
Subsequently,
training started with a 20 minute jog on the 29th
January and progressed gradually through the
sleet, rain and bitter cold winds, building up to
1.5 hours and losing 5 kilos somewhere along the
way probably due to the lack of alcohol than the
running.
The
race day dawned bright and cold, with a light
wind from the East.
Ron
Gadd and I travelled down together meeting up
with our other club runners in the changing tent.
After
the usual exchanges of good luck, we were off. I
have run this course twice before, so there was
no surprises, except me getting to the top of the
hill without stopping, now that was a surprise.
The biggest problem for me was the run in, to the
finish, along the sea front, it just went on for
ever and I was rapidly flagging, had to start
walking for a while at the 12 mile marker, but
resumed running again, after a few minutes and
managed to cross the line feeling like the living
dead. Just managed to carry the horse brass of a
medal back to the changing tent without falling
over.
My
time was 2.17.05 which I was reasonably satisfied
with, given my prolonged absence from the sport.
Congratulations
to Helen James and Ron Gadd for being
prizewinners on the day!!
Main
thing is the knocking clicking knees held out, as
did the back, at least up to the time of writing
this.
Thanks
to all Vets for their support and kind words and
especially John your all going off to
fast Soper, for running slowly with me on
the 2 club runs I attended, prior to the race and
buying me a beer.
Great
to be back, after a fashion.

Sidcup
10 Miles by Anne Unseld - Sunday 12
February
Sunday
the 12th of February was one of those miserable
wet winter mornings when sane folk snuggle down
into the duvet and dream of reincarnation as a
dormouse. Undaunted, 3 Bromley Vets ventured
north of the A20 and lined up with 300 other
comfort shirkers to run this relatively flat,
rather pedestrian course of 3 laps around the
streets of Sidcup. This town must have more dips
in its pavements than most, as I do not think
Ive splashed through so many puddles in the
course of a morning.
Despite
the weather and the slightly tedious nature of
the course, it was a good run, producing faster
times than at Canterbury. The marshals kept
smiling and did a good job. It was good to see
Linda running again.

Brands Hatch half
marathon by Adrian Walters - Saturday 11
February
Brands
Hatch Half Marathon 11th February 2006
I
have been going to Brands Hatch for over 35 years
as a spectator so I could not resist the chance
of running around the track.
There
was ample parking in the Paddock area but not
marshalled so some cars were blocked in!
There
were just under 500 runners who gathered on a
chilly, breezy morning by the pits on the
Starting grid where I met Bridgit, Chris, Ann
& Jane all keen to get going!
I
thought I knew the track well & could only
visualise a couple of testing hills, however I
discovered there is very little that is flat or
doesnt have a camber.
After
the start there is a slight rise to Paddock
Hill Bend then down & up Hailwood
Hill to Druids hairpin. We
would make this climb 3 times during the run.
For
those who know Brands Hatch the course was 1 lap
of the club circuit followed by 1 lap of Grand
Prix circuit. At the end of the 2nd lap you leave
the track at top of Paddock Hill & join the
perimeter dirt road. This runs past the paddock
area & climbs again to the top outside of
Druids (4 miles). Across the bridge over
Pilgrims Drop turning right to follow
the road back to main entrance. The course then
turns right into a couple of fields normally used
as car parks. Then back to main entrance &
behind the main Grandstands into the Paddock
area. A U turn under the tunnel takes you to the
back of the pits, down the Pit lane (7 miles)
followed by another lap of GP circuit. Exit the
track at Paddock Hill &
follow perimeter road again as before. You return
to the Paddock area & again U turn under the
tunnel but join the track on Cooper
Straight, through Surtees,
McLaren, up round
Clearways & Clarke
Curve, down Brabham Straight to
the finish line.
Everybody
got a goody bag with T-shirt, Medal, etc.
All
agreed it was quite a test but enjoyable. It was
also good for spectators as the runners pass the
Paddock Hill area 9 times & can be seen for a
good proportion of the track.
The
Kentagon was open for refreshments as well.
Showers
were available but a shell-shocked runner looked
me in the face & said Theyre
Cold so I decided to give them a miss!
I
have already made a note in my diary for next
year!

Canterbury
10 Miles by Anne Unseld - Sunday 29
January
Sunday
the 29th of January dawned bright and crisp, one
of those sparkling, although chilly, winter
mornings that makes you feel glad to be alive, as
5 Bromley Vets made a pilgrimage to participate
in the Barretts Canterbury 10 mile race. The
start was well organised, with positioning for
anticipated finish times. The course was through
the rolling countryside around Canterbury and
included charming streets and splendid views
across wide open fields, -although this did leave
us rather exposed to the bitingly cold January
wind. There is one hill of any note on the
course, at the 4 mile mark. There was some
apprehension initially at the mention of a ford,
but relief on finding out that this was dry.
However,
other areas of the course turned out to be
somewhat icy underfoot, causing some runners to
wonder if they had slid into an early version of
the Winter Olympics. This was my first 10 mile
race and it was an enjoyable run on a lovely
course, with good marshalling. Unfortunately,
Bridgit, who would normally have been the fastest
of the Bromley Vets taking part, was well below
form due to a health problem. Many thanks to
Chris for transporting Bridgit, Les and myself on
this pilgrimage.
